Merritt Bookstore What's Happening at the Store
then Molly won FSG’s Bookseller of the Year, and I was nominated for PW’s Bookseller of the Year, then in May we ( and I do mean WE as in everyone in the store helped ) began work on Merritt Bookstore Vol. II which opened June 1 in Red Hook. I have more than doubled staff, books, authors, and new friends. For the past ten years, the community of Red Hook has been asking me to open a store in their town. I finally found the perfect spot on the corner of 9 and 199. Within a week of signing the lease, I had over fifty applicants submit resumes. I have received many more since. All of them were terrific and it was a difficult choice. Amy Olson came home from Fordham for the summer to help set up the store, and her way of working with everyone allowed me to relax and pay attention to finding new and favorite books for all of you to enjoy...and boy did I find many a new friend to read. Just wait until you read some of the new books coming out this Fall and Winter. I should probably tell you who I am...I am Scott Meyer and I started the Merritt Bookstore in 1984 with two tables and no money. I now have two stores and no money. The store started with a staff of me...now in 1999 I have 25 of the best people in the world working for me. Oh, I also “incorporated” the store ( or me ) so I guess I should switch to WE because I no longer can do it alone and have not for the past fifteen years. Each year new people joined the Merritt Family, both staff and customers (if it were not for you we would not have two great stores). We strive to be the best we can so do not hesitate to help us improve to become the best community stores we can be. The Merritt Bookstore is again straining to find places for all our new books-new bookcases are in the store and we have put one of them behind the counter for books of special interest, whether it is an author signing or a book that is of particular interest to one of the Merritt Bookstore family.
Rose, Joanne, and Jon
have been trying to squeeze all the books into every nook and cranny.
Molly is directing the flow and is in constant touch with all of your
orders. She makes well over one thousand calls a month telling you your
order is in -if your message missed you, please do not hesitate to call.
Allen is receiving all the new and backlist books. I keep ordering them and Amanda keeps directing everyone as well as putting all the new books on the computer. Nancy is paying all our bills and receiving your checks to pay for all the new books. Alison is working with the publishers publicity departments. Laura is being very creative with the Upstairs Art Gallery. Lawton reviews all the children's books and Schuyler rearranges the low shelves.
