The Merritt Bookstore is one independent that is growing and going against the flow of most independent bookstores. At a time when the community bookstores are closing the Merritt Bookstore is increasing in sales and is expanding. The store took a major step onto the Internet with its webpage and online ordering ( www.merrittbooks.com ). Now with an even bolder move the Merritt Bookstore is becoming the Merritt Bookstores. We are opening a bookstore in Red Hook, New York. It will be called the Merritt Bookstore Vol. II. We will show the world that community stores are needed and the health of a village is dictated by its merchants and professional services it can offer.

The Merritt Bookstores will always be community stores that work closely with the community that they serve.

As to closing any store, what would I do? I have been a lover of books far too long to leave my trade. As owner and founder I can always reduce my salary when times are slim and then increase it as the tide turns.

The national news is full of negative stories about the independent bookstore. Now they can tell one that is promising and full of hope.

Will the national media take this story and promote it as much as they do the negative? Is it not time to be more optimistic?

How is the store financing this new endeavor? I took a second mortgage on my house.
