As
the crisp autumn winds begin to get crisper, residents of Red Hook
may find shelter in the cozy arms of their local independent bookstore.
Merritt Bookstore, Vol. II., located on South Broadway in the heart
of Red Hook, has everything you need to survive as the days grow
shorter and colder. Spend an afternoon leaf-peeping in the beautiful
Hudson Valley, and stop by the Merritt Bookstore in Red Hook for
all your autumn reading needs.
As
the trees and hills erupt in an emotional conflagration of color,
what better way is there to explore your own emotions than reading
poetry? Pick up selections from Walt Whitman’s poetry, compiled
by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham in a volume
entitled, “Laws
for Creations,” celebrating America and the democratic ideal.
To
continue in this pensive vein, crack open a small book that packs
a mental punch, “Consider
This...: Questions That Make You Think,” by Barbara Ann Kipfer.
This thought-provoking list of over 1000 questions may be discussed
with friends and family, or pondered in blissful isolation.
Perusing
the shelves of Red Hook’s local antique shops, you may feel the
weight of history pressing down upon you. Turn to Ian Kershaw’s
“Fateful
Choices: Ten Decisions That Changed the World, 1940-1941,” recounting
decisions by world leaders much more significant than the decision
whether or not you will buy the antique Edwardian snifter before
you.
Autumn
is the perfect season for farmer’s markets, and as you pick up one,
then two, then a dozen of those homemade apple cider doughnuts,
you may thank the book “Hudson
Valley Harvest: A Food Lover's Guide to Farms, Restaurants, and
Open-Air Markets,” by Jan Greenberg, that pointed you too this
beautiful local market.
And
what more could you desire than some good fiction to curl up behind
the couch and read during those rainy autumn afternoons? Dip into
some short fiction by the master Louis Auchincloss, “The
Friend of Women: And Other Stories.” Pulitzer Prize-winning
author Jane Smiley offers a copious new novel entitled “Ten
Days in the Hills,” an account of “ten transformative, unforgettable
days in the Hollywood hills.”
Local
history is of great interest during early autumn, as author Frank
Goderre will be on hand in Red Hook in late August to share his
book “New
York State Police Troop K.” Goderre recounts the events surrounding
the celebrated troop that served the people of New York from 1917
to 1950. Also coming to Red Hook to share her recently published
book will be Judy Renee Singer, author of “Still
Life with Elephant.”
Don’t
miss a special event at the Stissing House in Pine Plains, a book
discussion and signing with the author of “My
Father's Secret War: A Memoir,” Lucinda Franks. Her memoir recounts
her discovery that her father was a daring spy behind enemy lines
in World War II.
Remember,
as the leaves begin to fall and the chill winds blow, you can always
turns to the Merritt Bookstore for warmth, comfort, and any book
you desire. |
