| THE
COLORS OF MERRITT
Summer is over,
and while this is a tragedy we all must face, we will not have to
face it alone. Your local independent bookstore is here for you,
with our signature brand of bibliotherapy to help you make it through
the moody autumn months.
For a season
rich in emotion, from the dramatic colors of changing leaves, to
a chill autumn breeze, poetry is the prescription. Hoist up “The
Best Poems of the English Language,” a copious volume
selected by Harold Bloom.
Along poetry
vein, immerse yourself in “The
Way It Wasn't,” the autobiography of poet James Laughlin.
This is one of the most cleverly constructed autobiographies you
will ever encounter. Laughlin has arranged the story of his life
into an alphabetically topical conglomeration of fascinating people,
places, and events.
Perhaps the
most important and long-celebrated event in the fall is the culminating
contest of America's pastime: Major League Baseball's World Series.
As baseball teams across the nation compete for playoff spots, a
new season is also beginning: The National Football League. And
with NCAA Basketball just around the corner, what more could a sports
fanatic desire than Joe Garner's “And
the Crowd Goes Wild: Relive the Most Celebrated Sporting Events
Ever Broadcast."
Fiction is
of great comfort during these blustery days, and Michael Ondaatje
has just what you need. Check out “Divisadero,”
a brooding, beautiful, deeply psychological novel of a makeshift
family in the midst of tragedy.
Movie lovers will embrace into Ethan Hawke's novel “The
Hottest State,” the basis for a movie of the same name.
Written and directed by Hawke, "The Hottest State" is
a romance between a vain young actor and a beautiful singer-songwriter,
now playing at Landmark Sunshine Cinema in New York City.
Autumn is the
perfect time to relive childhood adventures. Check out a new translation
of “Le
Grand Meaulnes” by Alain-Fournier, a French novel originally
published in 1913. The only novel Alain-Fournier ever completed,
"Le Grand Meaulnes," sometimes called "The Wanderer"
or " The Lost Estate," has influenced many prominent works
of fiction, including Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby."
